Abstract: Thermal Recuperative Incineration (TRI) is used to treat Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in air streams using combustion. The treatment must occur approximately at 750°C for a residence time of 0.5 to 1 s. Nevertheless, this reactor also emits unburned CO2, CO and NO species when it is not properly designed. A pilot scale TRI, representing a section of a half scale industrial incinerator, was built. Using experimental design, we determined optimal operating domains and optimal geometry for the incinerator. A numerical simulation was proposed and was compared with experimental fields of velocity, temperature, and concentration of chemical species. This enabled us to characterise the aerodynamic, thermic, and chemical phenomena of the VOC oxidation and the formation of secondary pollutants. We proposed two simple techniques for reducing the emissions of NO and CO species.
